Black Women in the Media-Specifically television series
I am currently in a broadcast programming course. Almost each week we watch the history of Blacks in tv. We have explored different genres such as comedy, drama, and variety shows. In these films I've noticed that certain black women paved the way for who we see in the media today. Women such as Hattie McDaniel(first Black oscar winner that made it possible for Halle Berry), Cicely Tyson, and Dianne Carroll! These women were seen throughout the different documentaries. That spoke volumes during that time that these women were able to get work in such a white male dominated business! They broke barriers, but there are still leaps and hurdles that Black women today have to jump! In tv series today you don't see too many black women. To name a few, is Jada Pinkett Smith who is the star of Hawthorne, Tisha Campbell Martin of My Wife & Kids, and Chandra Wilson in Grey's Anatomy. As large as television audiences are today and how mass media has become, a few is not enough. Thankfully we have those producers and entrepreneurs such as Tyler Perry that make it possible to cast an all black cast for his movies and he has an all black cast on his television series on TBS. So we have come far, but still have far to go!
